Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked participating in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played many hours and lose most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often wager against one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
