Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor in the world by many of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of 1. His papa taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative comments from others kill his dream of being one of the best poker players in the world.
He started competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated many of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable passion for poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every single day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
