Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he liked gambling on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently wager against each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
