Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often wager against one another. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of NL holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
