Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played many hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The real advancement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
