Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an exciting assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, and several battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
