Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he played countless hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus even more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. He had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
