Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and lose most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
