Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi/low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, and several shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
